DENR gives city till Oct. 2009 to complete sanitary landfill
BACOLOD CITY -- Sangguniang Panglungsod Member Greg Gasataya, chairperson of the Clean and Green Coordinating Action Team and SP Committee on Environment, confirmed yesterday that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has given the city ample time up to October 2009 to establish a sanitary landfill dumpsite in Brgy. Felisa.
Gasataya said that the DENR pledged during their last conference at the City Mayor's Office to help and assist in the information and education campaign on waste segregation. They agreed after their meeting to create a monitoring team to assess the solid waste management implementation on the dumpsite closure and rehabilitation plan.
He further emphasized that they were scheduled to sit down along with the team from the Department of Health, hospital management, funeral parlor operators and various commercial establishments on various issues and concerns relative to solid waste management program.
"The DENR, DOH, funeral parlors and commercial establishments are invited in the next meeting to discuss things on segregation and proper waste disposal," Gasataya added.
Gasataya also confirmed that the city government will appropriate P15 million for the application of soil covering at the existing dumpsite.
On the other hand, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson who was also present during the meeting with DENR and Barangay Felisa officials said that he will address the problem of Felisa residents relative to the existing route of all dumptrucks going to the dumpsite.
